If you are looking for a low-maintenance perennial to add color to your landscape, Echinacea should be one of the top choices on your bucket list. Echinacea offers many benefits, including heat tolerance, deer resistance, and versatility. With little more than regular watering, Coneflower flourishes in full sun, attracting pollinators to the garden. This plant is a fantastic addition to rock gardens, cottage landscape beds, containers, cut flower gardens, and borders. Create a stunning landscape bed by pairing Echinacea with Phlox, Shasta Daisies, Coreopsis, Black-Eyed Susans, and Agastache, which you can find in our shop.
What is Echinacea?
– Echinacea purpurea, commonly known as purple coneflower, is a coarse, rough-haired herbaceous perennial native to the moist prairies, meadows, and open woods of central to southeastern America. The showy, daisy-like purple coneflowers (up to 5 inches in diameter) bloom throughout the summer atop stiff stems adorned with coarse, ovate to broad-lanceolate, dark green leaves. These flowers are excellent as fresh-cut or dried arrangements. The dead flower stems remain erect well into winter, and if the flower heads are not removed, the blackened cones can attract goldfinches and other birds that feed on the seeds.
How easy is it to grow Echinacea?
– Echinacea is easy to grow on average, dry to medium, well-drained soil from full sun to partial shade. It is an adaptable plant that is tolerant of drought, heat, humidity, and poor soil conditions. Plants generally rebloom without deadheading; however, promptly removing spent flowers enhances their overall appearance. They are excellent for massing in borders, meadows, native plant gardens, wildflower gardens, or shaded areas of woodland gardens.
