Also known as ‘Red Peanut’ or ‘Old Joe Clark’, this is an extremely early dual-purpose bean with a vibrant fuchsia pod color that can be stunning. Vines are very short, with runners usually only 2-3 ft long, but benefitting from support. Pods are straight and short, about 4.5 inches long and color development is best when pods are not shaded by leaves. When cooked as other half-runner beans, when seeds have swelled, pods are blushed with fuchsia but color fades during cooking, flavor is somewhat bitter, and pods can be a bit fibrous. I’ve found this bean to be too early and weak to produce a heavy crop of dry beans, but it is sometimes grown for dry beans that reportedly have a nutty flavor like peanuts. Seed stock originally obtained from the Sustainable Mountain Agriculture Center in Kentucky. Seed color currently varies from red to brown and I’m working to stabilize this trait. 50 days from sowing to harvest. Seed produced in Morgantown, WV. Germination 90% 11-30-2024. 30 seeds (sows 10 ft row)
