This tomato is both delicious and unusually nutritious. Developed by Drs. Tigchelaar and Tomes at Purdue University in 1974, it descended from a cross between common tomatoes and a wild tomato, Solanum habrochaites. This is similar to the development process of the ‘West Virginia 63’ tomato. Fruits are a deep orange color due to increased beta-carotene, the vitamin A precursor found in carrots. Other orange and yellow tomatoes that may look similar actually have different plant pigments that do not increase vitamin intensity. Vines incidentally tend to be extra hairy, a carry-over from the wild parentage. Fruits are large and meaty similar to beefsteak types, deliciously sweet, 10-12 oz, 60-80 days from transplant to fruit. Seeds produced in Morgantown, WV. Germination 96% 11-22-2023. 30 seeds
