The European Pear, scientifically known as Pyrus Communis, originates from southern Europe and has been naturalized in the US. This pear tree is a parent to many well-known pear cultivars. In spring, the tree produces large clusters of 1-inch showy, fragrant flowers, often before the leaves emerge. The leaves turn into a deep glossy green in summer and display a range of vibrant fall colors from yellow to red. Once established, these trees are more tolerant of clay and drought compared to other orchard fruits. Generally reaching up to 40 feet, they usually grow to about 20 feet in cultivation, making the harvesting process easier. The fruit, ranging in size from 3-4 inches, can be harvested from late summer to fall and is known for its sweetness and juiciness. These pears are perfect for fresh consumption or can be used in various recipes, from drinks to desserts.
