This is the only bush bean I offer but it’s also by far the most beautiful! Huge seeds are similar to ‘Borlotti’ or a horticultural bean, but are much more colorful. However, pods are not striped like some varieties. I’ve never seen this variety offered anywhere online so I’d say it is very rare indeed!October or “fall” beans are an Appalachian specialty and refer to beans that mature late in the season and are typically shelling (“shelly”) beans, meant to be picked when seeds are mature but not dry. They are very meaty and rich, while holding together well and suitable for many delicious recipes.Pods of this variety are tough and typically contain 3-5 seeds each. Plants are compact bushes with no runners. I’ve found that this variety is best planted around July 4, similar to Halloween pumpkins, and can use a space recently vacated by onions or some other spring crop. This allows the plants to escape the first wave of Mexican bean beetle damage and also avoid humid summer rains that can quickly ruin the ripe pods.Original seedstock obtained from Betty Flanagan of Randolph County, WV.
