About this item:
This Teasel is admired for its distinct appearance and stunning flowers, beneficial to wildlife, and commonly used dried in arrangements. Teasel plants feature prickly leaves and large elongated thistle-type flower heads containing hundreds of tiny blooms. The flower heads, measuring 2 – 4 inches long and 1 1/2 – 2 inches across, start blooming from the middle, gradually spreading outward. The blooms are pollinated by bees, attract butterflies, and are a favorite among birds for their seeds in fall. The plant’s scientific name ‘Dipsacus’ hints at its leaf bases forming cups that hold water, beneficial for insects to drink and deterring sap-sucking pests.
Teasels thrive in a range of soils, from loose, sandy to heavy clay, prefer full sunlight and are drought resistant, requiring minimal upkeep. Typically positioned at the back of gardens due to their height, reaching up to 6 feet. Prominent in dried floral arrangements, teasels can be dried by clipping the heads and hanging them upside down or allowing them to naturally dry on the plant. Their dried heads are also popular in craft projects. Commonly known as Fuller’s Teasel, it was traditionally used in the wool industry to card wool and is still utilized for its dye and traditional medicinal properties.
