Cannas are very easy to grow and offer both very attractive foliage and flowers. They provide an excellent tropical effect, and the large slender blooms attract hummingbirds and butterflies. Cannas are native to the tropics and subtropics. In areas with cold winter temperatures, the tubers can be lifted and stored to enjoy again next season. Plants started from seeds make nice house plants and look great in containers and will flower the first year if placed outdoors. Cannas are prolific; for example, planting 5 bulbs can yield over 25 in successive years. The seeds have an impressive longevity, remaining viable for over 600 years and can sprout even after going through wildfires, making Cannas an all-around robust choice for any garden.
