Description:
The Red Flowering Currant, scientifically known as Ribes Sanguineum, with other common names including Blood Currant, Winter Currant, and Redflower Currant, is a highly ornamental shrub. Its flowers are predominantly red, complemented by bluish-black fruit. Ideal planting times vary, including fall sowing, cold stratification, or planting indoors before the last frost and outdoors after the danger of frost has passed. The bloom period is from April to May, with harvesting times between August and October. This shrum thrives in hardiness zones 5 to 9, reaching heights of 6 to 12 feet, and spreads about 3 to 5 feet.
Light requirements range from full sun to partial shade, and the shrub prefers average soil and water conditions. Available in quantities of 25 seeds, the Red Flowering Currant not only serves as a vibrant addition to gardens but is also functional. It attracts butterflies and hummingbirds thanks to its fragrant, spicy foliage and stunning clusters of red blooms. The berries are similar in size to blueberries and can be enjoyed raw, or used in jams, pies, or dried for later consumption. Additionally, this shrub is resilient to various soil conditions and serves well for erosion control. It provides a habitat for woodland creatures, and its berries and seeds are a food source for local wildlife, adding life and color to its surroundings.
