The Pregnant Onion is an ornamental, non-edible onion characterized by a large above-ground bulb from which “babies” or pups protrude, resembling a “baby bump.” These pups can remain attached to the mother plant or be removed to propagate new plants. As a succulent native to South Africa, it is commonly grown in containers or as a houseplant requiring minimal care. The Pregnant Onion produces white star-shaped flowers with green veining, each on stalks up to 3 feet tall. Each flower spike can hold up to 100 flowers, and multiple spikes can bloom simultaneously on each bulb. Its blooming period lasts about a month, providing extended enjoyment. Traditional medicinal uses exist for this plant, but caution is advised as it can be poisonous if misused.

I had a plant like this when I lived in Texas easy to care for . It’s like a pregnant mom with kids piping all around, don’t remove the little babies it keeps the mother plant thriving
