Coffee Arabica is an evergreen shrub or small tree. Originally native to Ethiopia, it is now widely cultivated in suitable climates around the world. This species was likely the first type of coffee ever cultivated and is still deemed as the superior coffee type today, representing over 75% of global coffee production. Coffee cultivation is an important economic activity in many developing regions.
The Arabica coffee plant is adorned with showy, fragrant flowers that emit a scent similar to jasmine, making them visually and aromatically appealing. Following the flowering stage, the plant produces fruits known as “cherries.” These cherries undergo color changes from green to yellow, and finally to red when ripe. Each cherry houses two seeds commonly referred to as coffee beans. The beans are extracted from the dried fruits for further processing. Despite their sensitivity to frost, Arabica coffee plants are quite adaptable to pruning, allowing them to be shaped and sized as desired.
