A wonderful early, dwarf fava bean with excellent yields. Seeds are large, 4-5 per pod and uniform. Plants grow up to 3 ft tall and require no staking. Can be successfully sown into cold mud in mid-March in my area (zone 6a) and you’ll have lots of pods in early June when there is little else to eat from the garden. Not susceptible to rots like English peas that have similar cultural requirements and also tolerant to heat and aphids.Favas have a unique, delicious flavor and are typically shelled green, steamed lightly and peeled – delectable! Plants are excellent nitrogen fixers, developing huge root nodules with the correct soil bacteria present. Flowers are heavenly fragrant, perfuming the whole garden. I grew up in a Mediterranean climate where favas grew effortlessly but always planted ‘Broad Windsor’ or a similar tall variety that bears heavily but requires staking and is later. This variety excels in every way although pods are not quite as large. Developed a decade ago in Europe. Please note that light-colored fava beans can develop dark spots on the seeds that are completely harmless. I’ve separated the discolored seeds and planted them separately before to see if any disease symptoms appear, but they are just as healthy as the rest. I remove the most discolored seeds each year before selling but you may still see some some speckling.75-85 days from seed to harvest.
