Half-runner beans are known for their meaty pods full of plump seeds and shorter vines compared to regular pole beans. Commercial half-runner bean seeds sometimes produce pods that are fibrous, due to lack of careful stewarding and selection. In response, Bill Best of the Sustainable Mountain Agriculture Center has selected this bean for years to have the tenderest pods. Faster-cooking than some other half-runners, and good flavor but not exceptional in our taste tests. Pods are very plump and fleshy and average 5 1/2 inches long. They require stringing like most heirloom beans. Vines are actually quite vigorous like a regular pole bean and maturity is later than many half-runners. 69 days from seed to picking. Seeds produced in Morgantown, WV. Germination 92% 12-3-2023. 30 seeds (sows 10 ft row)
