This tomato variety is an improved version of ‘West Virginia 63’ and has the same late blight resistance with added resistance to Septoria leaf spot. It is also known as ‘West Virginia 17B’, as it was released in 2017 by the WV Agricultural Experiment Station. Dr. Mannon Gallegly returned to tomato breeding with assistance from Dr. Mahfuz Rahman of West Virginia University, during his late retirement after decades in academia. He is a personal friend of mine and I actually made some of the crosses in 2014 as a student at West Virginia University that resulted in this variety! ‘Iron Lady’, developed by Dr. Mutschler-Chu of Cornell University in partnership with North Carolina State University and released by High Mowing Organic Seeds was the parent that provided Septoria resistance. This tomato has somewhat larger fruits than ‘West Virginia 63’ with excellent flavor and meaty texture. Also resistant to fusarium and verticillium wilts. 60-75 days from transplant to harvest. Indeterminate. Seeds produced in Morgantown, WV. Germination 100% 12-11-2023.
