*Note* I have only a limited quantity this year due to varmint damage, so get them while you can!Coal Camp is an heirloom pole bean variety from West Virginia producing pods with a reddish blush and having an excellent meaty flavor. My field trials of this bean in North-central West Virginia (Zone 6) indicate that this bean variety is very high-yielding in the mid-Atlantic region and is exceptionally versatile. It’s also one of the most unique beans that I sell and one of my favorites.Pods are dark green and quite flat, 6 inches long, and may be stringless when picked very young but are traditionally picked when seeds are plump. Pods at that stage require stringing but when cooked for 30 min, are very rich and tender. This also makes a great dry soup bean, and the flavor is very meaty with a firm texture, and unlike bush dry beans whose pods often rot in late-summer rains, this variety matures seeds quickly and is easy to pick before destructive rains. I’ve noticed that it also has the tendency to sprout back in fall for a very late crop, even after a dry bean crop has been picked, instead of dying off like many varieties.Seeds are glossy brown with blue or greenish coloration when grown in cooler weather, very unique! Seeds produced in Morgantown, WV from original seedstock maintained by Betty Flanagan of Randolph Co, West Virginia. 60 days from seed to harvest.
