Introduction
Kailaan (Brassica oleracea var. alboglabra), also known as Chinese broccoli, is a nutritious leafy green prized for its tender stems and slightly sweet, earthy flavor. Ideal for stir-fries, steaming, or fresh salads, Kailaan is a fast-growing, easy-to-harvest vegetable that adds vibrant color and flavor to your garden or container planting. This hardy crop thrives in both cool and warm climates, producing crisp, flavorful greens in a short growing period.
Seed Sowing Instructions
Sow seeds directly outdoors in fertile, well-drained soil after the last frost, or start indoors 4–6 weeks prior for earlier harvest. Plant seeds 1/4 inch deep, spacing 4–6 inches apart in rows 12–18 inches apart. Keep soil consistently moist during germination, which usually occurs in 7–10 days. Thin seedlings to 6–8 inches apart to encourage strong growth and harvestable stems.
Plant Care Instructions
Chinese Broccoli prefers full sun to partial shade and rich, moist soil. Water regularly to maintain tender stems and prevent bolting. Fertilize lightly with a balanced fertilizer to encourage leafy growth. Harvest by cutting stems just above the soil line when plants reach 8–12 inches tall. Regular harvesting encourages new growth and prolongs the production period. Perfect for home gardens, raised beds, or containers.
