This has the prettiest plants of any southern peas I’ve grown – suitable for a classy ornamental garden! Both pods and stems are reddish-purple at maturity and plants are bushy and upright. The 7 inch pods have large seeds which have a mild but typical southern pea flavor and tender texture. This variety is like the old heirloom ‘Mississippi Silver’ but has resistance to root-knot nematode and other pathogens. It was released in 1990 from the South Carolina USDA Agriculture Experiment Station. About 65 days from seed to picking with a concentrated pod set.Southern pea pods are best picked when seeds are filled out and pods soften but before they turn brown or dry. Squeeze out the seeds or invest in a pea sheller to get the job done quick! Cook for 20 minutes in just a little water and serve with butter. Seeds produced in Morgantown, WV. Germination 99% 11-22-2023.
