Camellia Sinensis, or Tea Plant, is where both black and green teas are derived from. The difference between these teas is that black tea leaves are fermented, while green tea leaves are not. Originating from China, this plant is now grown globally in tropical and subtropical areas. Tea plants have been cultivated for over 3,000 years and are one of the most popular beverages worldwide.
The leaves of the Tea Plant contain essential oils, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes, and caffeine. These leaves have various uses, both traditional and contemporary, including in herbal remedies and tea oil for culinary purposes.
Tea Plants grow as a shrub or small tree and respond well to pruning, which makes harvesting easier as they can grow quite tall. The evergreen leaves, which are a bright shiny green, range from 2-6 inches in length. It is the younger, lighter green leaves that are usually harvested for tea. Leaves can be harvested every couple of weeks, ensuring a fresh supply. Impressively, these plants can produce for over 100 years.
Aside from their practical uses, Tea Plants are grown for their ornamental value. They produce fragrant, showy white blossoms that measure 1 ½ inches across, blooming in clusters and attracting bees and butterflies. These plants can also be grown in containers and moved indoors during colder months in cooler climates.
