The Beach Plum is a shrub native to the east coast of the US that produces edible plums. It is primarily found on beaches and coastal sand dunes of New England. This plant is endangered in Maine due to land development. The Beach Plum is renowned for its beautiful clusters of fragrant white flowers that appear in spring before the emergence of dark green glossy leaves. These blooms can be either single or double and are pollinated by bees and other insects. During fall, the leaves turn vibrant shades of orange and red.
The plums vary in color from yellow to red to blue to a nearly black deep purple and are 0.6 – 0.8” in size. Rich in antioxidants, these plums can be enjoyed fresh, dried, or used in jams, pies, or wine. Beach Plums thrive in pure sand, gravel, or well-draining garden soil and tolerate full sun, drought, salt spray, and cold temperatures effectively. This low-maintenance plant grows as a thick, dense, suckering shrub and can serve as an excellent border or hedge row, or be pruned into a single-trunked small tree. While birds and other wildlife enjoy the fruit, the plant should be kept away from livestock as the leaves may be harmful, and the seeds should not be consumed by humans.
