The Giant Sequoia is renowned as the largest tree in the world and the largest living thing by volume, with an average height of 150 – 280 feet and diameters ranging from 20 – 25 feet. The record-holder reaches 311 feet in height and 27 feet in diameter. One of the oldest living organisms on Earth, the oldest known Giant Sequoia is around 3,500 years old based on ring count. Its pinecones may take as long as 20 years to open.
Native to the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California, most of these endangered trees are now under protection within state and national parks. Known for their remarkable growth rate, Giant Sequoias can increase in height by approximately 4 feet annually, with trunk diameters expanding by about 2 inches each year. These trees adapt well to a variety of conditions, tolerating sandy to heavy clay soils, droughts, high winds, and coastal environments. They are popularly cultivated not only in the US but also in regions like Great Britain and Australia. These coniferous evergreens are also commonly used as Christmas trees.
