Delosperma x Cooperii, commonly known as Table Mountain Ice Plant, features fuchsia flowers that are 1-2 inches in diameter, covering entire stems. This perennial ground cover is evergreen, drought-resistant, cold and heat hardy, suitable for zones 4-10, and requires low maintenance. It spreads more rapidly compared to others in its category.
The Ice Plant has a deep green, shiny appearance and hugs closely to the ground, enhancing the texture and color of the garden floor. In colder weather, it may display a purple tinge. While it is not a true succulent, it behaves similarly with its vibrant, reliable flowers that open in the morning and close at night.
This plant is ideal for rock gardens, can be suited for container or hanging gardens if placed in full sun, and works well planted at the base of shrubbery and roses. It does not require deep soil for roots, making it versatile for various garden locations. In extremely hot climates, it benefits from some afternoon shade. Ice Plant is particularly valuable in drought-tolerant landscaping, capable of reducing reflected heat and glare when planted in areas with gravel mulch.
