Other: Asarum Canadense, commonly known as Wild Ginger, is native to the US and Canada and has many traditional Native American medicinal uses. Though no longer as common as it once was, Wild Ginger is considered a threatened species in Maine. This woodland plant thrives in shade and moist soil conditions but can tolerate some dry spells. Deer and rabbit resistant, it serves as an excellent ground cover with a neat clumping habit and heart-shaped leaves that can grow as large as 6 inches across. Its cup-shaped flowers are a lovely reddish color with three leaves or petals, which attract butterflies. Wild Ginger also serves as a host plant for the Pipevine Swallowtail Butterfly. Despite its name and similar gingery fragrance, it is distinct from culinary ginger, Zingiber officinale.
