Description: Chaenomeles Japonica is a popular ornamental dwarf shrub native to Japan. It typically grows to a height of 3 – 4 feet and can spread twice as wide. The plant is well-suited to pruning, allowing you to manage its size and shape, making it an excellent candidate for bonsai. It is drought and clay tolerant and thrives in most soil conditions except wet soil. Although it can grow in full shade, this will reduce its fruit production, which can be advantageous if used for security or erosion control due to its thorny branches.
The plant is adorned with extremely showy, bright red flowers that cover it in the spring before the leaves appear. These fragrant flowers bloom in 1 1/2 inch clusters and may rebloom later in the season. This Dwarf Flowering Quince is an important source of nectar and pollen for bees, including honey bees. It also produces ornamental 1 1/2 inch apple-shaped fruit that matures to a greenish yellow in the fall. The fruit emits a sweet and spicy fragrance so strong that it is often used as a natural air freshener. Additionally, various animals find the fruit appealing and enjoyable to eat.
