Description:
The Purple Flowering Raspberry, scientifically known as Rubus Odoratus, is a notable perennial native to eastern North America. This plant is distinguished by its magenta-purple flowers and red fruit. It is ideally planted through fall sowing or cold stratification techniques. The flowering period extends from June to September, with fruit harvest season running from July to September. The plant thrives in USDA Hardiness Zones 3 – 8, reaching a height of 4 – 6 feet and requiring a spacing of 6 – 8 feet. It grows best in full sun to partial shade and prefers average to moist soil conditions. Each pack contains 20 seeds.
The most striking feature of the Purple Flowering Raspberry is its ornamental value. It produces large 2-inch fragrant purple flowers and yields berries that begin as a coral color and mature to red, with each berry measuring about 3/4″ in diameter. The fruits are edible, although not as sweet as some other raspberries. Additionally, the plant is thornless and deer resistant, offering great aesthetic appeal with its unique, maple-like leaf shape that turns yellow in the fall. It adapts well to a variety of soil conditions, whether wet, dry, sandy, or heavy clay and tolerates varying light conditions from full sun to full shade.
This plant also plays a critical role in supporting wildlife; it is a valuable source of pollen and nectar for bees, including honey bees and bumble bees, as well as butterflies. The flowers and fruits attract songbirds, game birds, and small animals like chipmunks and squirrels, enhancing biodiversity in the garden.
