Other: The Chinese Quince Tree, native to China, is valued for its edible fruit and ornamental aspects. The trees are thornless and semi-evergreen, displaying fall foliage in yellow, scarlet, and dark red. They can adapt to sandy or heavy clay soils and are cold hardy to zone 5, which is equivalent to -20 degrees Fahrenheit. These trees are also popular for bonsai. In spring, large, fragrant 1 1/2 inch pink flowers blossom, attracting bees and butterflies. The quince fruit, initially green, ripens to a yellow-orange by fall and emits a sweet, spicy scent. The fruit, typically 5-7 inches long, offers a sweet flavor and is often used sugared or with honey for jams, pies, desserts, as well as in juices and liqueurs.
