Description: The Sword Fern, an iconic plant native to western North America from Canada to Mexico, is known for its lush, dark green, glossy evergreen foliage that is finely serrated. The sword-shaped fronds, pointed and narrower at the tip, range from 2 to 6 feet long. The leaves grow in a perfectly symmetrical pattern, making them a popular choice for both fresh and dried floral arrangements. Besides their aesthetic appeal, Sword Ferns have traditional medicinal uses and have been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. These long-lived plants are resistant to deer and can form colonies under favorable conditions. They thrive in maritime conditions and can tolerate some drought. Sword Ferns are adaptable to a variety of soils and environmental conditions. They grow well in full shade but can also thrive in sunny locations if adequately moisturized. The upright habit of the plant is more pronounced when grown in sunlight, whereas it adopts a more arching habit in shade. Capable of expanding well beyond 18 – 24 inches under ideal conditions, the Sword Fern can reach widths of 4 – 6 feet, and potentially up to 7 – 8 feet.
