This unique species of Monarda, native to the eastern United States’ prairies and coastal plains, is well adapted to sandy soils and periods of drought. The plants form neat clumps that are spread by runners. They are not invasive or aggressive, and are deer resistant. Spotted Bee Balm can also be grown in containers. It is an herb with very showy flowers and a delightful fragrance similar to that of Oregano. It blooms in upright spikes of nectar-filled flowers that attract honey bees, bumble bees, butterflies, and more. The long bloom period extends from April to August, and it also makes a wonderful fragrant cut flower.
