Details:
The Royal Poinciana is an extraordinarily showy and ornamental tropical tree. Originally from Madagascar, this tree is unfortunately endangered in its natural wild habitat but has become naturalized and popular worldwide, ensuring its sustainability. It features light, bright green fern-like evergreen leaves that measure 8 – 16 inches long, and striking red flowers approximately 4 – 5 inches across. As the seasons change, the flowers develop into large seed pods that begin green and mature to brown, with pods almost 24 inches long.
Growth and care:
Royal Poinciana Trees are fast-growing, with gains of up to 5 feet a year. They have broad, umbrella-like crowns that can extend up to 60 feet wide, making them excellent for shade. Being a legume, the Poinciana is beneficial for fixing nitrogen in the soil, enhancing fertility. The tree is highly resilient, capable of tolerating pollution making it suitable for urban settings, as well as coastal conditions like salt and wind. These trees are drought-tolerant and prefer sandy or loose soil environments. They may struggle in heavy or clay soils. In tropical to near-tropical climates, the wood is utilized for firewood and crafting wood-goods, and the tree also has traditional medicinal uses.
