The Pygmy Date Palm, awarded by the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit, is a popular ornamental dwarf tree native to Southeast Asia. Well-adapted to grow in part shade and low light conditions, these plants can tolerate a wide variety of soils but thrive best in sandy, well-drained mediums. Typically slow-growing, they reach an average height of 6-10 feet outdoors; indoors, they usually grow to about 4-5 feet tall. This makes the Pygmy Date Palm an excellent choice for container or indoor planting.
Each palm has a single trunk, often planted in groups to give an illusion of a multi-trunked tree. As the palm matures, it develops leaf scars on the trunk, creating an interesting pattern, and produces aerial roots. The evergreen foliage consists of 2-4 feet long fronds that form an arching canopy extending 5-7 feet wide. Near the base of the leaves next to the trunk are spines. These dioecious plants produce 1-foot long panicles of cream spring flowers which, if pollinated, turn into edible fruits by fall. The fruits are dark purple to brown or black, measuring about half an inch in diameter.
