The Pineapple Guava is a shrub or small tree that produces delicious edible fruit and stunningly beautiful flowers. It has silvery green, evergreen foliage which is deer resistant. This plant can tolerate some dryness and coastal conditions like salt air. In cooler climates, Pineapple Guavas can be grown in containers and brought indoors to overwinter. The flowers have two-tone pink and white petals, complemented by bright red stamens with golden tips. The petals are edible with a sweet tropical flavor, hinting at cinnamon. They are often used in salads. The fruit, fragrant in fall, is oval, green, and has sweet white flesh that tastes like a blend of pineapple, apple, strawberry, guava, and mint. It is commonly consumed fresh but can also be used in teas, wines, jellies, chutneys, and as a flavoring in ice creams and vodkas.
