Other: The Pacific Madrone is a drought tolerant evergreen tree native to the Pacific Coast of the US & Canada. It has received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. Featuring glossy dark green leaves and small bell-shaped flowers that attract bees, this tree also produces showy 8-inch long clusters of red berries in the fall, which are popular with birds and other wildlife. The trees provide valuable nesting habitat. The Madrone’s bark is a distinctive orange-red and peels naturally at maturity to reveal a smooth silvery sheen underneath, making it an exceptionally attractive tree. Historically, the Native Americans utilized the tree for medicinal purposes, and its hard wood is known for being excellent long-burning firewood.
