About this item:
The Dragon Tree, native to the Canary Islands and selected nearby areas, is renowned both as a striking ornamental in tropical landscapes and as a houseplant in cooler climates. Celebrated for its slow growth, the tree develops a single trunk for the first 10-15 years before branching. Over centuries, these trees establish an intricate, umbrella-like pattern as branches repeatedly split every 10-15 years. The tree’s typical height is 15-25 feet, but it can grow much taller over time.
The foliage is a vibrant blue-green, with sword-shaped leaves extending up to 2 feet long. Upon maturation, the bark becomes uniquely red-striped and scaly. When damaged, the leaves and bark secrete a red resin known as “Dragon’s Blood,” historically used for medicinal purposes and as a varnish and colorant. Note: The seeds are potentially toxic and should not be ingested.
The Dragon Tree blooms fragrantly between late winter and early summer, with flowers that transform into attractive coral-colored berries. Adapted to island life, it thrives under windy, salty conditions typical of coastal areas and exhibits significant drought tolerance.
This species is recognized as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List and enjoys protected status in certain regions.
