Other: The nutmeg tree, or pala, is a small tropical evergreen tree native to Indonesia. Myristica fragrans is the source of the spices nutmeg and mace. These plants thrive in warm & humid conditions. The leaves are dark green & glossy. The spring flowers are beautiful and fragrant. The nutmeg fruit has a green exterior that splits when ripe, revealing edible red pulp called mace. Inside the pulp of each fruit is one large 1 – 1 1/2″ nutmeg seed. Nutmeg is a spice used widely in dishes globally, including meats, vegetables, rice, soups, beverages like rum punch, and as a topping in drinks. It is also used in making juice, candy, desserts, baked goods, and jams. In the US, it is commonly used in pumpkin pies.
