Other: The Desert Rose is native to Africa and thrives in tropical rather than desert conditions despite its name. These small trees feature large caudices (swollen trunk bases), showy brightly colored flowers, and evergreen succulent leaves that grow only at the branch tips. The blooms, similar to Plumeria flowers, are up to 3” wide, displaying a range of color combinations and some fragrant varieties. They are deer resistant and make excellent bonsai specimens. It should be noted that the plant’s sap is poisonous if ingested. In cooler climates, the Desert Rose can be overwintered indoors or grown as a houseplant. These plants are known for their longevity, surviving for many decades.
