This tropical tree is native to the Indian subcontinent but has also naturalized in the US, the Caribbean, Australia, amongst other regions. Known for its rapid growth and moderate size, it’s primarily valued as an ornamental plant. Belonging to the legume family, it can thrive in poor soil conditions and helps improve nitrogen levels in the soil, thereby enhancing fertility. The tree features large, showy orchid-like flowers that cover it in a blanket of white, attracting hummingbirds. Post-bloom, the plant develops large 6 – 9-inch seed pods, which remain as an interest point through the winter.
